Espressif’s ESP32 to Support Amazon FreeRTOS

Reporting from Shanghai, China
Feb 27, 2018

Espressif Systems and Amazon Web Services are working together to bring the Amazon FreeRTOS-qualified ESP32 to the IoT market.

Espressif Systems and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have had a successful collaboration in producing cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) technology since AWS re:Invent 2016. This was further consolidated with such projects as the IoT Drink Dispenser using ESP32, and Espressif’s attendance at the AWS Pop-up Loft in San Francisco in November 2017, which showcased the ease of connecting ESP32 boards to AWS IoT in just a few lines of JavaScript using Mongoose OS.

Besides, Espressif uses extensively the free real-time operating system kernel (FreeRTOS kernel), due to its lightweight resource consumption, high performance and flexible design. In Espressif’s IoT Development Framework (ESP-IDF), Software Development Kits (SDKs) including the FreeRTOS kernel are provided for both the ESP8266 and ESP32 chips.

Amazon FreeRTOS has extended the FreeRTOS kernel with libraries that enable local and cloud connectivity, security and over-the-air updates. This makes a perfect match with Espressif’s flagship chipset, ESP32, and its advanced wireless connectivity, low-power consumption and high performance.

The runaway success of ESP32, since its launch in September 2016, and the recent adoption of the FreeRTOS kernel by AWS have paved the way for a closer collaboration between Espressif and AWS. The two companies will continue working together in order to bring the Amazon FreeRTOS-qualified ESP32 to the market, and make the secure connection of an ESP32 to AWS IoT even easier. At the same time, ESP32 users will be able to take advantage of the AWS Management Console and device-management cloud APIs.

From February 27 until March 1, Espressif was at the 2018 embedded world Exhibition and Conference (Stand: 3A-623). Amongst other things, we demonstrated how Espressif chipsets can securely connect to AWS in a way that simplifies the development, security, deployment and maintenance of IoT solutions. On this note, Teo Swee Ann, founder and CEO of Espressif Systems, said: “ESP32 is one of the most integrated Wi-Fi and Dual-Mode Bluetooth chips in the IoT industry. Espressif is delighted to be collaborating with AWS, so that we can jointly provide the most powerful solutions for any IoT deployment. The embedded world Exhibition and Conference gave us the opportunity to showcase Espressif’s part in this collaboration.”
