Zerynth and XinaBox’s Innovative IoT Toolkit Built Around ESP32-WROOM-32

Reporting from Shanghai, China
Aug 6, 2018

The XK12 IoT Starter Kit has been based on Espressif’s flagship SoC and is designed to dramatically simplify building electronic devices.

The news of a collaboration in the IoT industry caused us some excitement at the end of last month. Our partner company Zerynth announced it would cooperate with XinaBox. Zerynth simplifies IoT development by providing an easy and efficient way of programming the most popular 32-bit microcontrollers in Python and connecting them to the top Cloud infrastructures, with high-level standards of security. XinaBox, on the other hand, produces a range of modular xChips, using a connectivity standard without wires, soldering or breadboards. XinaBox’s modular hardware helps clients prototype quickly, test and build products. They also offer educational courses on electronics and a learning management system to support implementation.

The first tangible result of the partnership between Zerynth and XinaBox was announced only a few days ago. It is a revolutionary IoT development kit called the “XK12 IoT Starter Kit”. This device, which is programmable with Zerynth, is a fast tool for evaluating prototyping. By combining XinaBox’s  modular electronics with an ecosystem of software tools in Python, development time, speed to market, and costs should be significantly reduced.

The XK12 IoT Starter Kit comprises the following components:

  • 1 x CW02 – Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Core (based on Espressif Systems’ ESP32-WROOM-32)
  • 1 x AH01 – SHA-256 Hardware Encryption (ATECC508A)
  • 1 x IP01 – USB Programming Interface (FT232R)
  • 1 x OC03 – Relay Out (PCA9554A)
  • 1 x SW01 – Advanced Weather Sensor (BME280)
  • 1 x XC10 – 10-Pack xBUS Connectors
  • 1 x Zerynth Starter FreeRTOS license. To find out how you can activate the Zerynth license, click here

You can also find more information about each component on the official XinaBox product page.

As already mentioned, the CW02 development board is based on our ESP32, the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi-and-Bluetooth combo chip designed with the TSMC ultra-low-power 40 nm technology and an Xtensa® Dual-core 32-bit LX6 microprocessor. The rest of its principal characteristics are:

  • Operating Voltage: 3.3V
  • Input Voltage: 7-12V
  • Digital I/O Pins (DIO): 7
  • UARTs: 1
  • I2Cs: 1
  • Flash Memory: 4 MB
  • SRAM: 520 KB
  • Clock Speed: 240 MHz
  • Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11 b/g/n/e/i:
    • Integrated TR switch, balun, LNA, power amplifier and matching network
    • WEP or WPA/WPA2 authentication, or open networks.
