Espressif Announces ESP-IDF v6.0

Shanghai, China
Mar 27, 2026

This new version introduces comprehensive improvements across the development workflow, including tooling, build system, security, and hardware support.

Espressif has recently released ESP-IDF v6.0, a major update over ESP-IDF v5.x. This new version introduces comprehensive improvements across the development workflow, including tooling, build system, security, and hardware support. While ESP-IDF v6.0 remains largely compatible with applications built on v5.x, it also introduces several breaking changes and removes deprecated functionality, which may require code updates when migrating existing projects. ESP-IDF v6.0 is the latest stable release at the time of writing.

Among the key features introduced in ESP-IDF v6.0 are the ESP-IDF Installation Manager (EIM), which simplifies cross-platform environment setup; the transition from Newlib to Picolibc as the default C library, delivering improved performance and reduced memory footprint; and the adoption of the PSA Crypto API, providing a more standardized and maintainable cryptographic framework. The release also brings enhancements to the build system, including a next-generation CMake-based architecture (currently in preview) and support for CMake Presets for managing multiple build configurations. In addition, ESP-IDF v6.0 introduces an MCP Server for integration with AI development tools, as well as expanded Wi-Fi capabilities such as proximity-based service discovery (USD) and WPA3 compatibility mode.

Hardware support has also been extended in this release. ESP32-C5 and ESP32-C61 have graduated from preview to full support, while ESP32-H21 and ESP32-H4 are now available with preview support.

In addition to new features, ESP-IDF v6.0 includes a number of structural changes and cleanups. These include the removal of legacy peripheral drivers such as ADC, DAC, and I2S, treating compiler warnings as errors by default, and the gradual deprecation of legacy MbedTLS cryptographic APIs in favor of PSA Crypto. These changes are intended to streamline the framework and align it with modern development practices.

However, as with previous major releases, ESP-IDF v6.0 also introduces a set of breaking changes that require careful consideration when upgrading from earlier versions. Espressif strongly recommends reviewing the official migration guide to ensure a smooth transition.

ESP-IDF v6.0 is now available on Espressif’s GitHubAdditional information, including full release notes and documentation, is available on the official Espressif documentation website. Please refer to the technical blog for more information.
